Southeast Texas moms get second chance through drug court

BEAUMONT -

During this Easter season, two Southeast Texas moms are experiencing their own personal redemption thanks to Jefferson County's Drug Court.

The moms are Jena Aldredge of Port Neches and Angela Carlson of China.  On Thursday, both ladies graduated from the program.

The program, which is about eight years old, offers substance abuse addicts rehabilitation under the supervision of a judge.

Both Aldredge and Carlson have been addicts since they were children.  And both ladies almost lost their kids because of their addictions.

Aldredge is a recovering alcoholic.  She says her addiction led to arguments with her husband, and because of one of those fights, she was distracted away from her sons, and one accidentally shot the other.

The wounded son recovered, and that's when Aldredge knew she had to start her recovery.  Child Protective Services took custody away from her.

Aldredge began her journey through drug court.  At about the same time so did Carlson.

Carlson shared a similar experience, but her addiction was to prescription medication.

Last year, she was involved in a wreck with her children, while under the influence.  She was taken to jail, and CPS took her children.

Both women have been reunited with their kids, after completing drug court.

Judge Larry Thorne helped create the program after noticing that few parents, who had recovered from an addiction, were able to regain custody of their children taken by the state.

The success rate now of participants who graduate is more than 60 percent.
