Beaumont ISD votes to take redistricting case to D.C. district court

Posted: Updated:

The Beaumont Independent School District is putting its redistricting troubles in the hands of a three-judge panel in a Washington D.C. District Court.

BISD Monday voted 5-2 to file for immediate pre-clearance of redistricting and other election matters. Pre-clearance is still pending with the department of justice.

The school board says the vote does not take the case away from the DOJ but rather allows the three judge panel to review both the D.O.J's side of the case and the school district's.

"Elections are barred if it's not pre-cleared. It has to be pre cleared. We've been assigned something through the appeals court that still has to be pre-cleared," Board President Woodrow Reece said.

Last week a Ninth Court of Appeals ruled that due to redistricting Reece along with Terry Williams and Zenobia Bush would lose their seats because all seats should be up for election and those three board members did not file to run in the May race.

Linda Gilmore, Donna Forgas, and Marcelino Rodriguez filed for the trustees spots and are unopposed on the May ballot.

Their Attorney Mike Getz says his clients will now try to intervene in the proceeding being filed in Washington.
