Temple Police Stepping Up Patrols on 31st Street After String of Fatal Accidents

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- After a string of fatal accidents on 31st Street in Temple, police officers are hoping to curb the trend by stepping up patrols in the area.

They will focus on 31st Street specifically from Avenue R to FM 93.

Temple Police Department says there have been 15 fatal accidents in Temple from January of last year until today. A third of those have happened on 31st Street. All of the 2013 fatal accidents in Temple have happened on that street.

Three of these fatal accidents involved pedestrians crossing the roadway and being struck by vehicles.

The other two involved vehicles being struck by other vehicles.

Officers say there is a direct relationship between the number of visible traffic law enforcement present and the number of accidents in an area.

In 2012, the number of accidents on 31st Street in Temple grew 26% from the previous year.

More police will be monitoring 31st Street for the foreseeable future. They are looking out for specific things such as changing lanes without signaling, speeding, following too closely and failing to yield.

They will also be monitoring violations by pedestrians.
