Workers make sure rides are safe for South Texas State Fair

Posted: Updated:

It's all about safety at the South Texas State Fair. With the big event less than a week away, crews with Carnival Americana were out at Ford Park on Friday setting up rides and making sure they're up to code.

"Safety's very important to us," said carnival manager Alan Cockerham.

"I mean that's the basic essence of what we do is try to provide a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone."

The fair is sponsored by the Young Men's Business League and will feature close to 50 rides this year. YMBL spokesman Tom Broussard says half a million people are expected to show up over the course of 11 days, and ensuring their well-being is a top priority.
"It goes back to the 3 things we want for a patron," said Broussard. "We want them to have fun, we want it to be a good time for them, and we also want it to be a very safe experience."

Workers checked the ferris wheel seats, making sure they were securely fastened and all the components were in working order. The ferris wheel, like all the rides here at the fair, is inspected more than just once a year.

"At the very basic level they go through a daily inspection, and then of course they're watched throughout the day during our operation, but the rides go through a pre-opening inspection as well," said Cockerham.

Admission is free on the fair's opening night for everyone there between 5:30 and 6 p.m. Thursday for the opening ceremony.
