Beaumont man gets life in prison for killing police officer

Posted: Updated:

A plea deal puts John Wesley Nero in prison for life for the killing of a Beaumont Police Officer. Nero was charged with Capital Murder in the death of Officer Bryan Hebert. Judge John Stevens described Hebert as a unique person who died as he lived, serving others.

He was 36-years-old when he died.

Prosecutors say Nero was running from police on July 8, 2011 when Officer Hebert tried to stop Nero's vehicle using spike strips.

Police say Nero swerved on Dowlen road to hit Hebert's vehicle. The crash killed the officer.

Nero walked into the courtroom Thursday with his hands and feet in chains awaiting his fate. Outside the courtroom a parade of Bryan Hebert's brothers in blue walked into the courthouse.

"I miss him," Sergeant Bryan Baker said of Officer Hebert.

Sergeant Baker worked overnights with Officer Hebert during his early years with the Beaumont Police Department.

"Bryan was a good guy, always cracking jokes," Sgt. Baker said.

Pleading no contest, Nero kept his head down only saying yes when asked by the Judge John Stevens if he understood the capital murder charge he was facing.

During Impact Statements Bryan's sister Holly told Nero "There is a void in our lives that will never be filled. Instead of meeting him, you ran like a coward and killed him."

Bryan's father Glenn told Nero "I hate you. You're very lucky that you don't have to face me on the street. I hope one day I can forgive you. Right now I can't do it."

Nero Defense Attorney James Makin gave 12News a statement, saying "Now perhaps Beaumont can move forward and begin the healing process. Mr. Nero feels very remorseful for his actions. Our sympathies go to the Hebert family,"
