Safety first at Nederland Heritage Festival

Posted: Updated:

The Nederland Heritage Festival is off and running for its 40th year celebrating its Ruby Anniversaryand hundreds made it out for opening day Tuesday.

Everyone crowded the cuisine walk to try treats like fried bacon and red velvet funnel cake.  And of course there are the rides.

In the back of every parents mind the fear that an accident will happen when their child is on a ride.  But the company behind the machinery says its track record is one that can calm your nerves.

Gold Star Amusements says each ride is properly maintained through check ups. For example if a track, wheels, or bearings on a ride become worn they are immediately replaced.  The rest falls on the operators who are required to check rides daily and then sign off a required checklist before opening the ride.

"You don't want to have claims, you don't want to have accidents. You don't even want to have pinches, you don't want to have trips," Owner Mike Featherston
Featherston says each and every operator is certified through Gold Star before operating any rides.

As for the festival the money raised at the annual event helps the Nederland Police and Fire Departments to serve the residents. Proceeds also go to city parks, the city library and other organizations.
