Tournament brings talent, big bucks to Orange

ORANGE -

The first professional angler ever to compete and win in Orange, TX will be named in one week.

Thursday will mark the beginning of the Bassmasters Elite Series tournament, a first in the city's history.

102 anglers were at Baptist Hospital in Orange Sunday doing boat and safety checks. They were also saying cheese for the cameras taking updated photos for use on their social media pages.

An economic study done by Impact Data Source looked at average daily spending for anglers and visitors on food, supplies, and lodging.  The study estimates that revenue from media coverage will bring the city of Orange more than $1 million in revenue from the tournament.

As for taxes, the city and county is estimated to generate over $35,000 from the tournament.

"Orange provided a unique opportunity to throw a challenge at these guys. You got the best in the world coming to fish at this tournament. It's going to be a good challenge, that's why it's being called the Sabine River Challenge," Orange Chamber of Commerce Co-Chairman David Jones said.

The anglers will be launching their boats at the Orange boat ramp every morning of the tournament.

On Saturday there will be a free Neil McCoy concert followed by a fireworks show.
