Jack Brooks Regional Airport air traffic control tower expected to stay open

Posted: Updated:

Two weeks ago the Jack Brooks Regional Airport was on the sequester chopping block. It was among 200-plus U.S. airports the Federal Aviation Administration listed as those that could see their air traffic control towers shut down due to budget cuts. Now it appears that won't happen.

"And I don't expect it to happen anytime in the future," Jack Brooks Regional Airport director Alex Rupp told 12News.

Based on information he received from the FAA, Rupp says their tower is safe from closure because the airport is federally maintained. But he says tower employees will still be furloughed, losing one work day per pay period beginning in April.

"I believe the furloughs are the extent of what we'll see here at this tower. I've talked with tower personnel and they don't see any impact on their operations," Rupp said.

Rupp says although the situation is not ideal, he's relieved no one will be losing their job.

"I'm relieved to the extent that it doesn't look like there's going to be any more impacts to this tower and to the people working here who live in Jefferson County".

If for some reason the tower does close down, air traffic control for Jack Brooks would be run by Houston TRACON.
