Construction beginning Monday on Neches River Bridge

Posted: Updated:
BEAUMONT -

Construction that may potentially affect hundreds of motorists is set to begin Monday morning. It's for work on the Neches River Bridge. The project is expected to last for three years.

The first part involves shifting eastbound traffic to the westbound lanes to build a new eastbound bridge.

Lanes on the westbound side of the bridge have been restriped, work that was completed over the weekend.

By the end of the month the Texas Department of Transportation plans to shift all traffic to the westbound side of the bridge.  TxDOT says when that happens westbound and eastbound traffic will both have two lanes each.

Monday, crews will start the process of shifting traffic by installing a new concrete barrier on the westbound bridge. The work is expected to take the whole month.  Once complete, traffic can shift to the westbound lanes and work can begin the building of a new eastbound bridge.

The westbound entrance ramp at the base of the Neches River Bridge will be closed to reduce congestion.

TxDOT says throughout this entire project it expects the worst delays during rush hour. Some drivers could experience delays of 15 to 20 minutes.
