HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Three people are dead after a head-on crash with a wrong-way driver this morning in northwest Harris County.

It happened just after 3:30 a.m. on Highway 290 between Kickapoo and Binford.

Investigators say a woman in her 20s was driving south in the northbound lanes when she struck a Ford Explorer head-on. The female was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Harris County Sheriff's officials, three students in the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets were in the SUV. The driver and the backseat passenger were killed on impact. The SUV driver was identified as 18-year-old Amy Paecheo. The backseat passenger has been identified as 18-year-old Miguel Hernandez.

The front seat passenger was taken by ground to Memorial Hermann Hospital in stable condition.

"The people in the Explorer all three were freshmen at Texas A&M in the Corps of Cadets," said Sgt. Susan Cotter with the Harris County Sheriff's Office. "They were on their way back to College Station for a function that they were supposed to be at this morning."

Authorities believe alcohol may have been a factor the crash. The wrong-way driver hasn't been identified as of yet.

The northbound lanes of Highway 290 were blocked for hours due to the investigation. All lanes reopened just after 9am.
