A Southeast Texas coaching icon will be laid to rest this week.  Steve Shaver Sr. died Friday night.

As head coach of the French High School football team, he led the 1984 squad to a co-state championship with Odessa Permian after the game ended in a 21-21 tie.  Shaver also coached Central High School during its first three years, starting in 1986.

In 1998, Shaver was inducted into the Hall of Honor at Sam Houston State University where he was a football letterman from 1957 to 1960.

Visitation will be Monday from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Broussard's Mortuary on Major Dr. in Beaumont.  The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at North End Baptist Church in Beaumont.

Steve Shaver Sr. was 72.
