BEAUMONT -

Lamar University's music building and a campus garden are getting a new name.  Retiring Lamar University President Dr. Jimmy Simmons and his wife, Susan, were honored during halftime of Saturday night's men's basketball game at the Montagne Center.

Texas State University System Chancellor Brian McCall announced during the ceremony that the board of regents voted to name the music building on campus, where Simmons began his Lamar career in 1970, the James M. "Jimmy" Simmons Music Building.

McCall also announced the garden behind the music building will be named after Susan Simmons, continuing a tradition of nearly twenty years of planting gardens across the campus for former first ladies.

The couple was also presented with a portrait of themselves, the work of Lamar alumnus Jason Robichau.
