Former LC-M CISD teacher sentenced for improper relationship

Posted:

A former Little Cypress-Mauriceville teacher has been sentenced to six years deferred probation and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine after he pleaded guilty to having an improper relationship with a student.  Michael David Shugart Jr, 36, of Orange, has also been ordered to surrender his teaching license.

On Tuesday September 4, 2012 the Orange County Sheriff's Office received a call from the Administration at the Little Cypress Mauriceville Consolidated Independent School District concerning an improper relationship between a teacher at the junior high school and a high school student.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division was contacted and Investigators obtained information from school district officials and students about the alleged offense.

A spokesperson for the LC-M CISD told 12News last year that Shugart had only been employed with the district for 16 days and resigned after the information surfaced.

On December 12, 2012 the case went before a grand jury and Shugart was indicted on one count of improper relationship between educator and student.  This is a 2nd Degree Felony offense.  The next day Shugart turned himself in at the Orange County jail.  He later posted $5,000 bond.

Shugart was sentenced Friday morning in the 260th Court.  Part of his plea agreement forbids Shugart to attend any sporting event in Orange County.
