(KCEN) -- Twenty years ago today a gun battle erupted at a compound near Waco, setting off a deadly standoff.
On February 28, 1993, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms tried to serve a search warrant at the Branch Davidian Ranch at Mount Carmel. Their goal was to arrest Branch leader David Koresh.
Shortly after, an intense shootout killed four agents and six Davidians. The shootout lasted more than two hours.
Koresh and Branch members refused to leave the compound, initiating a months-long standoff.
After 51 days, the siege ended on April 19, 1993 when a fire started in the complex.
That fire killed 76 people, including 20 children, two pregnant women and Koresh.
