Treacherous Winds Mangle Wreak Havoc On Houses

Posted: Updated:

Families all over central Texas woke up to the same somewhat devastating scene this morning.

Last night's wicked winds knocked down fences and tore holes in roofs.

"This morning when I woke up, it was pretty bad," says Halroy Gordon as he assesses the damage to his Killeen home.

His roof took a beating from Monday's treacherous winds.

"There's shingles all over the yard, as you can see," Halroy explains as he picks up the pieces, knowing in the back of his mind things could have been much worse.

"At first, it was really subtle, and it started getting louder and louder. I thought at one point, the roof was coming off, it was so bad," Halroy said.

Just four houses down Brendan Allin has a crew tending to a different kind of aftermath.

The powerful gusts blew a gaping hole through his fence and another one through his wallet.

"Insurance will probably cover it, but the deductible is probably higher than what the fence is going to cost, so it's just going to be easier to just go ahead and pay it," Brendan said.

It's been a busy day for Stephen Brooks with Killeen Fence Company.

By noon, he already had 40 new work orders.

"Lots of phone calls, we have people with blown down gates. They have pools in the back yard, there's a dog on the other side, you have people worrying about kids playing in the yard with that dog on the other side," Stephen said.

Just walking through their neighborhood, roof shingles are found lying around in yards and driveways, and several spotted roofs can be seen in need of repair.

"I'm pretty surprised, because these are fairly new homes," Halroy says.

Now he faces the damage 40 mile per hour winds can do, so he can find out just how hard they hit.

"Well first thing, I'd like to call someone and try to repair it, try to get a couple estimates and see what they say."

The Killeen Animal Shelter also took a low blow from the weather.

It was already full, and the downed fences brought in nearly 20 new dogs overnight.
