Patient involvement may be a vital key in lower health costs, according to a new study. Arterosil HP Medical Advisor Dr. DeSilva weighs in.

A new study that appeared in the February issue of Health Affairs found that those who took a more active role with regard to their general health and their health care resulted in lower health costs compared to those who didn't take such an active role.

Arterosil HP Medical Advisor Dr. Derrick DeSilva, M.D. was not surprised with the findings when he weighed in yesterday.

“The reduction in costs shown in this study was up to 21 percent,” said Dr. DeSilva. “This shows that patient involvement in their care is critical.”

Dr. DeSilva, M.D. is a practicing Internist and Senior Attending Staff at Raritan Bay Medical Center and is on the teaching faculty at JFK Medical Center in New Jersey.

The study found that patients who were able to become more skillful and confident in taking care of their day-to-day health as well as their health care, had much lower health costs. The difference was between 8 and 21 percent lower. Dr. DeSilva suggested that health care systems look for ways to offer support to a patient’s natural inclination to become more educated about their health care options, as a way to help improve both patient health and to lower costs.

Suggestions for patients with steps they can take were provided that suggested patients get involved both before, during and after an appointment with their doctor to become more involved in the process. Before the appointment, patients can gather up and bring along all of their prescription medications as well as any vitamins and supplements they regularly take, suggested Dr. DeSilva. It is also helpful to have questions written down in advance.

“During the appointment, it is helpful for patients to have a decent understanding of their medical history,” said Dr. DeSilva. “It's also a good idea for them to ask questions to clarify any instructions, and to ask about possible treatment options as well.”
