Jack Brooks Regional Airport may lose air traffic controllers in budget cuts

Posted:
Jefferson County -

Air Traffic controllers at the Jack Brooks Regional Airport are on the Federal Aviation Administration's chopping block as part of $600 Million in spending cuts.

The Federal Aviation Administration is preparing for the possibility of a budget sequestration on March 1, 2013.

A list of air traffic control facilities that could be closed was released by the FAA Friday afternoon.

Despite the possibility of the control tower closing down, Jack Brooks Regional Airport Director Alex Rupp says air service would not be affected. Flights would continue as scheduled, he said, and air traffic communication would be handled by Houston TRACON.

Among other cost-cutting changes, the FAA is considering eliminating the overnight shift at over 60 facilities; and reducing preventive maintenance and support for all air traffic control equipment.  The FAS said it is also considering furloughing 47,000 employees for one day.
