Vidor ISD implements new safety measures for elementary schools

Posted: Updated:

There was a message for parents on the Vidor Elementary School marquee Tuesday afternoon, letting them know about a new change in policy: Starting 2/18 visitors must enter the front doors only to be scanned.

It's part of the Vidor Independent School District's new effort to keep its elementary students safe. Superintendent Dr. Jay Killgo sent a letter to parents last week outlining several new changes.

All visitors will be required to check in at the front office, with proper ID, only between the hours of 7 7 a.m. nd 2:45 p.m. Visitors will only be able to enter the school through the front entrance by the front office. No students will be allowed to sign out after 2 p.m.

The change is a new policy that has some parents upset. Parents are no longer allowed to walk their children to the classroom in the mornings. Several parents voiced their concerns over this on our Facebook page Tuesday. But many of the parents picking their kids up from Vidor Elementary Tuesday were in favor of the new changes.

"When it comes to the safety of my children, I feel better not to have a lot of different people walking in and out of the school every morning," said parent Nikki Kinard.

In response, VISD spokesperson Sally Andrews issued this statement to 12News:

"One of the most important things we do in Vidor ISD, in addition to providing a good education, is to keep our students safe. We know that our decisions are not always popular and that change is sometimes difficult to accept. However, we feel like higher security measures are the best choice for our children. We must do all we can to keep our precious charges safe, and these new guidelines will be of great assistance in helping that happen.

We appreciate the support of the families of Vidor ISD as we work to ensure a safe learning environment for each student."
