Black history museum needs donations

Posted: Updated:

February is a month set aside to honor African American history.  A group of Orange natives are trying to do just that everyday by creating a museum dedicated to presenting and preserving African American history.

Organizers need your help bring the museum to life.

Orange resident Henry Lowe is proud of who he is and he wants to share that pride with his city.

"Black history is a very rich history and shouldn't be lost at least to our children," said Lowe.

About two years ago Lowe, with a group of local friends, came up with the idea to create an African American history museum to honor ancestors and pioneers of early Orange.

The Orange African American museum is charted by the state of Texas as a non-profit organization but it's still in the early stages.

Lowe and the rest of his board members are looking for a place to house all of this history.

"We have a goal of $100,000 for a building," said Lowe.

The organization has their eye on Ware Plaza off of Third Street and Park, one of the few buildings that are still standing from when Lowe was a teen and it's owned by Joe Ware.

"He is the first African American to be elected county commissioner," said Lowe.

So with community support an idea to showcase the rich African American history in Orange can be turned into reality.

"Our ancestors should be honored, they weren't just slaves - they had names, they were men and women, flesh and blood," said Lowe.

If you would like to make a donation to the museum you can contact a board member by telephone at 409-330-4243.  If you have any questions you can also feel free to email the organization at www.orangeafricanamericanmuseum@gmail.com.
