Posted: Updated:

After one of the shortest reigns in history, Pope Benedict XVI Monday announced his resignation saying he is no longer strong enough to fulfill his duties.

The news came as a surprise to many including Diocese of Beaumont Bishop Curtis Guillory.

The Bishop says he respect respects the Pope's decision to step down.

"I think it's a great sign of his leadership, his courage as well as humility," Guillory told 12News

He is was the first German pope since the 11th century. At 74-years-old he was one of the oldest ever elected when he became Pope in 2005.
