Beaumont Animal Services officers are looking for answers after someone shot a large egret with an arrow.

Officers received a call Monday about a large, white bird that had been shot with an arrow. The caller, a resident at 695 Belvedere Dr., found the bird as it was going from yard to yard with an arrow, the type commonly used for target practice in archery, protruding from its body. When officers arrived they found a Great Egret with an arrow still in its back.

Beaumont Animal Services Officer Bundrick was able to apprehend the egret and took it immediately to Beaumont West Animal Care, where Dr. John Falgout removed the arrow and is going to try and nurse the bird back to health. The bird is stable but will undergo x-rays and possibly surgery.

Animal Services is asking for anyone that may have information on who shot the egret with the bow and arrow, to contact them at 409-838-3304.

Great Egrets are protected under Chapter 64 of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Code and title 50 of the Code of Federal Regulations.
