The Palms Golf Course on Pleasure Island in Port Arthur isn't pretty, but it also hasn't been open since Hurricane Ike left it in ruins in 2008.
The Port Arthur Renaissance Group, which has leased the golf course from the city, plans to change that.
"The city sees a need in bringing this property back to life, and we're going to do it," said Kevin Johnson, general manager of the Port Arthur Renaissance Group.
Johnson says crews should start breaking ground on the new course by mid-March. Men were already at work Friday afternoon, removing debris and dead trees still left over from Ike.
Johnson is optimistic that the new golf course could be open as soon as October. Although it's still in the engineering and planning stage, he says everyone involved is excited to get the ball rolling.
"We've had people coming in from Phoenix, from San Diego, and they're extremely impressed with what they're going to have to work with because it's a beautiful golf course," Johnson told 12News.
Johnson says right now the cost to fix up the course and the club house is estimated at $850,000. He says all that money has come from private investors, who are no doubt eager to see The Palms restored to its former beauty.
