Clothing, shoe found in area where human skull was discovered in Jasper County

Posted: Updated:
JASPER COUNTY -

Investigators searching an area in Jasper County where a skull was found Tuesday night say they found a jacket and shoe early Friday afternoon. Sheriff's deputies say the jacket and shoe are both male clothing.

Early test results on the skull show it is from a male between 17 to 30-years-old, so it is believed that the clothing belonged to the same individual.

Additional bones have been found in the area, but investigators have not yet determined if the new bones are from a human.

"We found more bones. We are not sure if they're all human or not. But, we sent them to Huntsville to be tested," says Jasper County Sheriff Mitchell Newman.

The skull was found by a man walking north of Jasper in a wooded area off Highway 96.  Evidence found early in the investigation has been sent to an anthropologist in Huntsville.

Investigators have not yet determined the person's identity or if the death was the result of foul play.

Meanwhile, the Orange County Sheriff's Office drained a pond in Buna Friday hoping to find a man who went missing in Orange County back in 2010.  A deputy tells 12 News investigators only found a shell casing.  Investigators say the two cases are non related at this time.

"We just want to get some closure to some family and find out what happened," says Sheriff Newman.
