Vidor -- Police in Vidor and agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation are investigating a bank robbery that happened at the Compass Bank located at 855 North Main Street. Officers received the report just before 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Investigators say the robber jumped over a counter, grabbed cash, then jumped back over the counter and fled on foot.
A police spokesperson says an officer was at the bank within seconds of the robbery because he just happened to be in the area when it took place.
12 News spoke with bank customer Amanda Leger. She said she saw a man running from the building as she walked up to the front door. She said she knew immediately that the bank may have been robbed.
Leger tells 12 News she tried to open the bank doors but they were locked.
"My first thought was are they ok? Is somebody hurt?" says Leger.
Officers pulled up to the bank as Leger was going back to her car. Investigators took a statement from her.
Leger said she is a bit shaken up from the robbery.
"The man could have grabbed my purse. He could have tried to do anything. Luckily, he just ran," says Leger.
Police say the robber was a black male, wearing dark clothes, a hat with ear flaps and sunglasses. Witnesses tell 12 News the robber looked to be between the ages of 40 and 50.
He was last seen running behind the Crossroads Shopping Center. Police tell 12 News they have reasons to believe the suspect is no longer in the immediate area.
