LC-M CISD spokesperson says Twitter, Facebook rumors causing disruption

Posted: Updated:

A spokesperson for the Little Cypress-Mauriceville CISD says rumors spread through Twitter, Facebook and other social media are causing unnecessary stress for parents, students and staff.

"Today we are seeing the negative effects of social media run amok. Not only is this perpetuating incorrect information and scaring parents, it is disruptive to the educational process, which is in the best interest of ALL of our students," said Combs.

The district released the following statement Thursday afternoon:

Rumors of students bringing guns to LCM High School or students from another district coming to LCM with guns are running rampant. Law enforcement officials began investigating the rumors last night and have concluded there is no truth to it. Officers are still on campus today, to assure parents of their students' safety. They are investigating Instagram and Facebook messages as well as other ways in which the rumor has been spread and who is responsible for instigating the rumor.

Campus and District administrators want to assure parents that their childrens' safety is at the top of the schools' priorities.

If any findings to the contrary are discovered on any campus, parents would be notified directly.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office has also issued a statement about the rumors:

For Immediate Release:

The Orange County Sheriff's Office has been diligently working with the administrators of the Little Cypress- Mauriceville ISD in identifying individuals who may have been responsible for the wide spread rumors that students at LCM High School or Students from surrounding schools had or would be bringing guns to the LCM High School Campus.

The Sheriff's Office has investigated multiple social networking sites as well as text messages and has determined that these rumors are not true. These rumors where spread through social networking sites and through text messages and grew exponentially as they were passed around.

It is the belief of the Orange County Sheriff's Office that there was no threat to the safety of any students at the LCM High School Campus. However, as a further precautionary effort, Orange County Sheriff Keith Merritt had several Deputies at LCM High School today to ensure the safety of the students and to assure parents that such action will be investigated and that the safety of our children is a priority.
