A man Beaumont police say was stealing copper wire from utility poles Thursday morning is in the Jefferson County Jail.

Shortly before 3 a.m. a Beaumont Police Officer patrolling the 2600 block of Hazel Street noticed a suspicious man by a utility pole. Officers say the man saw the patrol officer and quickly got on a bicycle and rode down the street with two 5 gallon buckets on the handle bars. The officer stopped the man and saw the buckets were filled with copper wire.

Officers say the man was going from utility pole to utility pole cutting and taking the copper ground wire. The wire was the property of Entergy.

The man, identified as Tony Jackson, 48, of Beaumont, already had a warrant for theft out of Jefferson County. He was taken to the Jefferson County jail and booked in for theft-state jail felony and the existing warrant.
