Martial artists offer to train SETX teachers self-defense

Posted: Updated:

Tre Miller and Chris Pettingill are passionate about kung fu. And with school security on everybody's mind, the two want to use their talents to train teachers to defend their classrooms from a shooter... without having to use a gun.

"What if it's in a gun safe and somebody kicks in my door, there's gotta be options, and that's what we're here for," said Miller.

At Miller's White Lion Kung Fu studio in Beaumont, they demonstrated how something as simple as a mop handle can be used to disarm an intruder.

"We're using a tool that a teacher, using that technique, doesn't have to use a lot of muscle," Pettingill said.

The two attended Monday night's Port Neches-Groves ISD school board meeting to offer a 32-hour course to teachers for a discounted price. They also plan to send letters to all school districts in the Golden Triangle with the same offer.

"The teacher would be able to defend the students and herself or himself with a staff or open-handed moves," said Miller.

The two aren't sure if the school districts will take them up on their offer, but hope it at least helps raise awareness.

Miller says the training sessions they have in mind would include 4 classes of 8 hours apiece, and would cost $1,000 per group.
