Renowned SETX journalist legally intoxicated in fatal accident

Posted: Updated:

Louisiana investigators have released toxicology report information concerning an accident that claimed the life of Southeast Texas journalist Bill Leger.

Trooper Stephen Hammons of Louisiana State Police Troop I tells 12 News that Leger's blood alcohol content was .26 grams percent blood alcohol concentration. Hammons says the accident remains under investigation.

A level of .08 is the legal limit.

The accident happened near Scott, LA on Highway 93. Police say Leger was heading south when he left the roadway while entering a curve. Police say he overcorrected which caused his car to roll. It came to rest in the roadway and was subsequently struck by another car headed north.

The driver of the second car, 52-year-old Clint Melancon of Carencro, was arrested for DWI after police say his blood alcohol level was over the legal limit. He was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center for DWI 1st offense.  He has since been released after posting a $1,000 bond.

Trooper Hammons says it has not yet been determined which of the two impacts killed Mr. Leger.  Investigators are still waiting on a coroners report and other elements from the investigation.
