Diverse group honors MLK at Saint Anthony Cathedral Basilica

Posted: Updated:

Saturday was a day of devotion, deep thought, and diversity.

Saint Anthony Cathedral Basilica in Beaumont held its 6th annual commemoration mass in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's upcoming birthday (January 15th),

Southeast Texans of all cultures paid their respects, with readings in 6 different languages: English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Ebo, and Cajun French.

"When we think about what MLK stood for, that was diversity, so we tried to reach out to as many ethnic cultures as we could," said Linda Duhon-LaCour, Director of African-American Ministry for the Diocese of Beaumont.

But it wasn't just Dr. King's birthday they were celebrating.

"We are celebrating the 50th anniversary of Dr. King's speech 'I Have a Dream'," said Bishop Curtis Guillory during his sermon.

Bishop Guillory emphasized Dr. King's dream of a beloved community, where people of all races live together in harmony.

"Unless we understand each other, respect each other, and accept each other as basic human beings with the same aspirations, then as Dr. King himself said, we will perish as fools," he said.

After the mass, everyone was treated to a special performance from yet another unique culture... the Alabama Coushatta Tribal Dancers.

It was an extraordinary day for an extraordinary man, who would have turned 84 this upcoming Tuesday.
