BISD now accepting transfer requests

Posted: Updated:

If you live in Beaumont and want your child to attend a school next year that is not in your zone you can now begin asking for a transfer.

It looked like the wait for a Black Friday deal.

With a line of about 40 people waiting in the cold for the doors to open some parents like Tom Knight even camped out in their cars for more than 24 hours.

"To get a good spot so that you have a better chance of achieving your goal," said Knight.

A goal to be the first to put in a transfer request to move their child to a different campus within the district, one that they say is a better school for their child.

"As a parent you have to advocate for your child make sure they get the best education," said BISD parent Ashley Kemper.

Each parent is given a request form with places for their top three school choices. BISD says you need to put three different school names because if you put the same name in each slot and you don't get that transfer you will end up in the school you're zoned for.

"If parents live in the zone of the campus they're seeking they don't have to do anything," said Philip Brooks the assistant superintendent for the BISD administration.

But like many parents Leigh Kuchera doesn't live in the zone where she wants her son to go to junior high.

"For probably three or four years we've been dreading this moment that he has to go to middle school," said Kuchera.

If Kuchera's request isn't granted she says she's left with two choices.

"If it came down to it we'd probably do private school but we may even move so can go to Marshall Middle School."

The parents who choose to move into different zones must be able to show proof of residency and submit the documents to student services.

BISD says parents can request their child to be transferred to any campus with the exception of schools with 'magnet' status like central high.

Transfers will be based on available space at each school and no determinations will be made until the end of May.

The deadline to submit a transfer is January 31st and it's is first come, first served.
