Solid waste-conversion plant to be built near Beaumont landfill

Posted: Updated:

The bull dozers at the Beaumont landfill can expect to shovel considerably less garbage in the future. The city recently struck a deal with a private company that would send 1,400 tons of solid waste per week from the landfill to a plant that will convert it into diesel fuel.

"The city of Beaumont is the first city in the state of Texas to embark on a project of this nature and magnitude. This is the type of project that is going to put Beaumont on the globe, not just on the map," said Dr. Hani Tohme, Director of Water Utilities and Solid Waste.

The company, Fair Energy Operations based out of Plano, Texas, will pay an estimated $30 million for the land and facility. The plant will be built in a vacant field about a half mile from the landfill.

Aside from being the first of its kind in Texas, the plant is also expected to be beneficial in a number of other ways.

"It will lead to the creation of 50 news jobs, the city will be paid $200,000 every 6 months... and we're going to be increasing the life of our landfill by approximately 5.6 years," said Tohme.

It's a project that will ensure solid waste... won't go to waste.

The company still has to finish up getting all its permits taken care of before it can be begin construction, but expects the plant to be built by the end of the year.
