Garage sale for Sandy Hook families

Posted: Updated:

A Beaumont woman has stepped up and organized a community-wide fundraiser for the families dealing with the loss of children and loved ones in the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.

The cash register rang out Friday from bargain shoppers flooding a room in the Colonnade Shopping Center.

"It's about seven in the morning and we're packed over here," said shopper Curtis Jackson.

Beaumont native Shanoah Hilliard created this community garage sale for more then just the great finds.

With prices that can't be beat after the two-day garage sale is over every last penny raised will go towards the families who lost children and loved ones in the Connecticut shooting.

"It makes me feel good to know our community is reaching out to the people who need help," said shopper Georgia Dunlap.

Newtown is still reeling from the deadly shooting last month where a gunman forced his way into sandy hook elementary school killing 20 students and six staff members.

"I found a fund that is specifically set up to help them with the things that I needed help with," said Hilliard.

Two years ago Hilliard lost her own son to heart failure and when her friends raised money to help pay for a funeral it helped her through the grieving process.

"It helps you take time to find your new norm and focus on your family and what's important."

All the proceeds will be sent to a PTA fund that will help the families with funeral and memorial expenses, therapy and Hilliard hopes some parents will be able to take time off work, like she did, to reconnect with their other children and family.

"Hopefully they'll be able to regroup and find their new norm," said Hilliard.

The garage sale will also be open again Saturday January 5 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.  It's at the old Colonnade Shopping Center in the 6200 block of Phelan Boulevard.

If you have any question you can reach Hilliard on her cell phone at 409-790-4354.   Call or text her if you want to be able to help the Newtown victim's families.
