New Pleasure Island Marina nearing completion

Posted: Updated:

At the Pleasure Island Marina in Port Arthur, there's only enough useable docks for one row of boats. In 2008, Hurricane Ike left the marina in ruins and boats scattered everywhere.

"The marina was just destroyed, so we had to do something, or just close it up and not have a marina anymore, well that didn't make much sense," said Pleasure Island Commission Chairman Terry Doyle Thursday afternoon.

So after years of planning and construction, just a few loose boards remain, and the new $10 million marina is almost ready to go.

"It's just going to be a dramatically different animal," said Doyle.

Expected to be completed by the end of January or early February, the new marina will be bigger than the old one, able to house 300 boats. Another big difference is the docks; it now has floating docks instead of anchored ones, which Doyle says are safer and hold up better in big storms. The marina is also expected to boost the local economy.

"I can't imagine somebody not building a restaurant out there, I can't imagine somebody not building a tackle shop. So it'll mean jobs, it'll mean tangible things the City of Port Arthur can tax," said Doyle.

There's no doubt that docks filled with boats will be a welcome sight.
