Kountze ISD Superintendent resigns

Posted: Updated:

12 News HD has learned that Kountze Independent School District superintendent Kevin Weldon has resigned his position after nearly two years at the helm.

District trustees have called a special meeting for Friday, December 21 at 5 p.m. to accept his resignation "...conditioned upon the acceptance of a Superintendent position with another school district." They are then expected to name an interim replacement.

Weldon was at the center of controversy this fall when he directed the district's high school cheerleading squad to stop making "run-through" signs that included biblical verses. Weldon argued they were violating the separation of church and state. He said while he supported what the cheerleaders were doing, he was advised by legal counsel the biblical passages were in violation of federal law.

His orders were eventually quashed by a district judge who issued a restraining order against the district.

12 News has placed calls into Weldon, but they were not immediately returned.
