Driver identified in fatal hit-and-run accident

The Beaumont Police Department says it has identified a man responsible for a fatal hit-and-run accident that claimed a life.

A spokesperson for the Beaumont Police Department Friday morning issued the following news release:

Subject:Anonymous tip leads investigators to person responsible for fatal hit-and-run crash

A Crimes Stoppers tip helped Traffic Unit Investigators locate the vehicle and identify the driver responsible for the hit-and-run crash that killed Mitchell Glenn Downs.

Last night, the suspect voluntarily gave a statement in which he admitted responsibility for the crash. We will not release his name until we formally obtain a warrant for his arrest.
