Rainfall provides some relief during drought

Posted: Updated:

Tuesday's rainfall was good news for Southeast Texas. The area is under a severe drought.
But drought was the last thing on the minds of people like Walter Housley on California Street in Nederland.

"I mean it was coming down by the buckets, I mean it was coming down," Housley said.

After enough buckets fell, ditches and canals began to look like small rivers. It hobbled people like Housley's neighbor - Elizabeth Meyers.

"I needed to go pick up my kids from school and I didn't know if I was going to be able to get out of the driveway," Meyers said.

A team from Jefferson county precinct two road and bridges made the trip to Nederland to unclog and clean drains Tuesday to keep flooding at a minimum.

"A lot of people run off into these ditches. Some of these ditches are pretty deep, something could happen," Charlie Moore with the department said.

Even though the weather hasn't been typical for a severe drought From September 1 until December 4 the area has fallen more than 7 and 1/2 inches below normal rainfall. While inconvenient, rain was much needed.

"It'd be better if it came at a gradual pace instead of dumping it all at once," Housley said.
