"UGK" inducted into Port Arthur museum

Posted: Updated:

Two legendary Port Arthur rap artists take their place in history.

The duo Bernard "Bun B" Freeman and the late Chad "Pimp C" Butler, better known as the "Underground Kingz" were inducted into the museum of the Gulf Coast Sunday.

They started UGK in 1987.

Freeman and Butler introduced the world to a style of rap music it had never seen before.

It took the globe by storm and the success has finally led back to one place, home.

Joining other musical greats Sunday, UGK were inducted into Port Arthur's museum of the Gulf Coast.

"Many people haven't been blessed to make it this far, I take it in strides," Freeman said.

Starting in the late 1980's, UGK quickly became an influence in rap music.

Together the group released seven albums. Apart Freeman and Butler released even more albums as solo artists over those 20 years.

With the latest honor being in the very place where it all began, Freeman hopes the success can inspire the youth of his city.

"There's so many people that I looked up to in this area. Hopefully we can be the people that future generations can look up to us," Freeman said.

Butler was unable to attend Sunday's induction. The rapper passed away almost five years ago.
"Even though he's not here physically, he's here spiritually. I can see him up there grinning right now saying "yeah mama"," Wes Monroe, Pimp C's mother, said.
With their raspy southern drawl and raw lyrics, UGK made their name known over the airwaves and now that name is forever imbedded in Port Arthur history.
