One hospitalized after compressed air explosion in Orange

Posted: Updated:

One person was taken to the hospital by air ambulance Sunday morning after a large air bag used to move barges exploded at Signal International in Orange.

Orange Fire Captain Jerry Ziller told 12 News by phone that the incident happened around 9 a.m.  The injured person had severe injuries, but was conscious and alert as they were putting him in a helicopter to be flown to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth in Beaumont.

Ziller said there was never a threat to the surrounding community because the explosion only involved compressed air and not a chemical or flammable material.

A person answering the main phone line at Signal International told 12 News that a spokesperson with information about the explosion would not be available until Monday.

12 News will have more information as it is released by officials.
