Friends hold vigil to remember Matthew Alexander

Posted: Updated:

While Several agencies are investigating the sudden death of 18 year old Matthew Alexander, Friday night, loved ones held a vigil at the school to remember the former drum major. Texas Southern University officials say Alexander went to the ER Sunday after experiencing pain, but went back to his dorm when the wait was too long. The next day Alexander was pronounced dead at St. Joseph's medical center. His sudden death is rocking friends and family waiting for answers.

Matthew Alexander was definitely a celebrity to all who knew him and that's evident in the turnout at Friday night's vigil. At least 100 mourners showed support and respect for Matthew and his family. One of his best friends, Mariah Alexander describes her friend saying, "Matthew was a kind, gentle, sweet person. He would give anything if he had it. He meant the world to us, his family and friends." She says, "We actually won prom together. Because of the last name, they thought we were related, but there's no relation. That's the best memory, winning prom together."

Those are the types of memories many friends and teachers share. Matthew didn't join band until he was in high school, but he was so good that he was chosen as drum major. Carl Collins, Matthew's high school band director tells 12 News HD, "He's all about excellence. We were doing something with the band and he's like, we need to make sure we're together."

Some who tried to speak just couldn't find the words, overcome with loosing their friend so young and so suddenly. Mariah Alexander organized the vigil, "I'm sorry you guys, it's just so hard to loose somebody you was with the day before."

It's a loss felt by parents, friends, school and an entire community. Alexander says, "that Matthew is the celebrity he thought he was and he's in a better place now." That's a place where those who love him know his brightness is surely shining down on them.

The Harris County medical examiner has performed an autopsy but has not released a cause of death.
