Jasper police captain reinstated; named CEO of agency

City of Jasper Mayor Mike Lout tells 12News that Jasper City Council Wednesday voted to name Captain Gerald Hall to the title of Chief Executive Officer of the police force.

Lout says the actions came after council was notified by the Texas Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education that it was required to name either an interim chief or chief executive officer of record within 7 days of the departure of a presiding officer.

Interim Police Chief Harlan Alexander resigned abruptly last week after he was appointed interim in June to replace Chief Rodney Pearson.

Hall was one of the officers that sued the city, claiming former Chief Pearson discriminated against him when he was stripped of his captain rank. Hall and the city agreed to settle the lawsuit in yesterday's meeting. That settlement including the reinstatement of the rank of captain as well as $40,000.

Other officers have filed similar lawsuits against the city. Some of those have settled, but at least two remain in effect.

Lout says Hall will serve in this capacity until a new police chief is found. He said the city had the option of selecting the mayor, city manager or any other high ranking member in the city to the position, but decided to place the newly re-instated captain in the position.

Lout added that while they have not received any applicants for the permanent position they are planning on  posting it in the major law enforcement publications.
