One dead in east Texas plane crash

CHEROKEE COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

Officials say one person died in the plane crash in Cherokee County Monday night.

He's been identified as 64 year old John Thomas Steeper of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. He was the pilot of the plane at the time of the crash.

Lufkin DPS tells us the plane exploded on impact.

The National Transportation Safety Board is taking over the crash investigation.According to FAA spokesman Lynn Lunsford, the plane was a Cessna 421, which can hold up to eight people.

The plane was enroute to Tulsa from Houston.

The plane crashed in the area of Cheeseland Road in southern Cherokee County around 9:30 p.m.
