600 families receive free holiday meal

Posted: Updated:

For the past 45 years Some Other Place in Beaumont has hosted a Thanksgiving Store offering low to no-income North Jefferson County residents their choice at foods to create their holiday meals.

As shoppers pick out ingredients to create their holiday meals they find themselves giving thanks for the generosity of others.

"I really appreciate this from the community for this," said Beaumont resident Beverly Bill.

Taking care of her five grandchildren on her own has not been easy but Bill will now have a meal to put on the table this holiday season thanks to some other place and their thanksgiving store.

"For my family it means a lot," said Bill. "Times are hard right now but I feel like I'm blessed today."

"If they're on a limited food budget this makes all the difference," said Chrissie Joyner with Some Other Place.

This year the need for the program has increased to serving 600 pre-registered families from 500 of last year.

Each family is given food vouchers for meat products and then depending on the amount of people in their household they are given their choice of a certain amount of canned goods.

"If their children only eat Mac and Cheese, well we can be very generous because our donors have been very generous," said Joyner.

With more than 1,200 cans of corn alone all of the food, fresh produce and meat vouchers were donated by area organizations, church groups and children.

"Our school children from our daycare centers all the way up to high school and Lamar have been so generous about getting out and knocking on doors and robbing their pantries at home," said Joyner.

Our local youth didn't only take the time to donate food but with more than 250 volunteers walking families through the store most of them are school-aged kids.

"A lot of kids don't have and won't have for thanksgiving so maybe this will be a blessing to them like it is my family," said Bill.

About 900 families applied to have access to the thanksgiving store back in October.

Some Other Place was only able to register 600 of those families due to qualifications and food supply.

But it isn't only around the holidays that families need help. You can always contact some other place to find out how you can volunteer.
