Locals give to children across globe

Posted: Updated:

Over the past week Golden Triangle families, businesses and organizations have been putting their thankful hearts to good use by filling shoeboxes with gifts for millions of suffering children around the world.

Southeast Texans are celebrating their blessings by giving back to needy children across the globe.

Through Operation Christmas Child locals are joining tens of thousands of people across the U.S. to fill empty shoeboxes with toys, school supplies and hygiene products for impoverished children around the world.

After donating shoeboxes last year with her church Ashlee Handland knew she had to come back this year and donate six boxes for children of different ages.

"I hope they enjoy the present and realize there are people out there who care about them even though they're in bad situations maybe, we're out there for them," said Handland.

Hundreds of local volunteers have been working hard packing and transporting the boxes to the next stop on their journey to a child in need.

We've got over 5,000 shoe boxes in this truck to be given out to suffering children in more than 100 countries.

"Impacts their lives to know that people care for them," said the coordinator of the Proctor Baptist Church drop off site Gloria Frederick.

Frederick has been working with the Operation Christmas Child program for the past six years and says through this effort children learn they are loved and not forgotten.

"Children in other countries this is the only thing they get for Christmas," said Frederick.

Monday was the last day for drop offs but come December the shoebox gifts will be going to more than nine million hurting children overseas.
