Stick shift stops gunmen from leaving with stolen car

Posted: Updated:

Port Arthur police are still searching for several men who they are calling armed and dangerous after officers say the men shot a man early Friday morning.

According to police the shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. at the Rampart Apartments on Gulfway Drive.

"It was told to us by the gentleman who got shot that he was trying to buy drugs," said Major Raymond Clark with PAPD.

Clark says the victim admitted to meeting his attackers at a gas station earlier that night.

The suspects then lured the 36-year-old Port Arthur man to the entrance of the apartment complex with the promise of drugs.

"As soon as he pulled up he was approached and shot," said Clark. "Best thing he could do at that point was to get out of the vehicle and run."

Officers say the men then attempted to make off in the victim's car, but after struggling to drive it due to the stick shift the men abandoned the BMW about a half-mile from the apartment complex.

"It was a small caliber weapon," said Clark.

"That's why he survived the attack. He's very, very fortunate."

Major Clark says this should be a lesson to those looking to engage in criminal activity - next time you might not be as fortunate.

Police say despite suffering six gunshot wounds to the upper body and face the victim was alert when he was transported to Christus Hospital Saint Elizabeth and was able to give a description of his attackers.

Police say the victim is in stable but serious condition.

The Port Arthur Police Department is urging anyone with information on these suspects to call (409) 983-8600.
