Help needed to build a Habitat home

Posted: Updated:

A local family is in need of your help to spend Christmas in a home of their very own.

The house is one of Habitat for Humanity but the lack of weekday volunteers has forced construction to go on for months.

The sound of power tools and hammers is music to Pearl Harmon's ears.

Construction began on Pearl's Habitat for Humanity home back in June but there's obviously a lot more work to be done.

"It's quite important to us that we be in our home for Christmas," said Pearl.

Pearl says her and her 10-year-old daughter Faith's health conditions make this home all the more important.

Pearl has dialysis treatment three times a week and her daughter has cerebral palsy and is confined to a wheel chair.

And this will be the family's first home after living in a small apartment for 16 years.

This house is being crafted specially for pearl and faith; with wider hallways and doorways the entire home is wheelchair accessible.

The house is still only in skeleton form and it's taken almost six months to even get this far because of a lack of volunteers throughout the weekdays.

The executive director of the Jefferson County Habitat for Humanity Uliana Trylowsky says it's easy to sign up and help out.

"You don't need any experience or tools all you need is the desire to help," said Trylowsky.

The desire to help a mother and her little girl who's fighting to walk again and is most looking forward to a place where she can have room to play.

"Please come out! Anytime, an hour, two hours it makes a difference in someone's life," said Pearl.

If you would like to help pearl and her daughter have a home for the holidays and volunteer during the week please call the habitat for humanity office at (409) 832 - 5853.
