American Airlines to return to Jack Brooks Regional Airport

Posted: Updated:

American Airlines is set to have a press conference Thursday morning to announce they will be flying out of the Jack Brooks Regional Airport beginning next year.

President of the Greater Beaumont Chamber of Commerce, Jim Rich says, "I feel like we scored a touchdown." But he also says that touchdown is just the beginning of the game. Even though SETX met the $1.5 million revenue guarantee, there is still much to do, "The game is not won until we have established air service and don't have to tap into the revenue guarantee this community put up to share the risks. it's up to us to use our airport."

But another reason American Airlines plans to takes the risk.to fly out of Jack Brooks is that the airline wants to make its hub at Dallas-Fort Worth grow. The news release issued by the airline says it will add new domestic service through its regional affiliates, American Eagle and Expressjet, from Dallas/Fort Worth to four cities including Beaumont/Port Arthur. Rich says, "American Airlines wouldn't have made this decision if they didn't think the market was here."

Owner of JK Chevrolet Subaru in Nederland, Robert Turner says what's good for american will also be good for Southeast Texas, "You know there is four to five hundred thousand people in our market area and a market this size has to have an airport, but we have to use it. It's not just for people who live here. Its for getting our friends and family and business partners to this market. It's for getting conventions and people to come here to fish, to hunt, and use all the things that we enjoy. But we got to have an easy way for them to get here."

The press conference is set to begin at 10am, Thursday morning.

The airport has not had a commercial airline since July of this year when United Express ended its service between Houston and Beaumont. United presently does offer bus service from Beaumont to Houston Intercontinental Airport. And they tell us today, they will continue that while there is a need.
