Texas opts out of national sex offender registration

Posted: Updated:

Texas is one of five states to refuse participation in a new national sex offender registry program.

The program was supposed to create a consistent system for registering and tracking sex offenders that would link all 50 states

Texas lawmakers say the cost to run the program is too much for the state to handle, estimating it to be up to $38 million.

The state risks losing about $1.4 million in grant money that goes to local law enforcement agencies by not participating in the program.

The other four states that chose not to join are Arizona, Arkansas, California and Nebraska.

34 states have still been unable to meet the full requirements of the national program which include but are not limited to following standardized registration requirements.
