Marsh fire drops ash over Mid-County

Posted: Updated:

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says a large plume of smoke Sunday that could be seen for miles in the Golden Triangle came from a marsh fire.

The fire was started in preparation for duck season.

It's unclear who started the marsh fire but it was a controlled fire. 12 News HD tried to contact Texas Parks and Wildlife to see if it was responsible for the controlled burn Sunday, but offices were closed.

The worst was over by 2 p.m. Sunday. On Twin City Highway in Mid County only a few small pieces of ash were still flying and falling, all the result of a marsh fire miles away in Orange County.

The weekend was a laborsome one for Joey Armstrong.

The 42-year-old was cleaning his garage in the 2900 block of Ash street when something strange started happening.

"At first I thought it was pieces of a trash bag. Then it started to become heavier and started looking like snow and falling everywhere," Armstrong said.

Now Armstrong has more to clean up. And to add insult to injury, he had just cleaned his pool Saturday.

"I got to clean that pool out, that's going to take awhile. As for everything on the bottom that's all got to be picked up manually. I don't want the pumps circulating because the filter will clog and that's an expense," he said.

Ash was scattered all over Mid-County.

At Nederland High School, piles collected in the parking lot.

In the Spurlock Chase Community neighbors suffered similar pool problems as ash gathered in them and around the homes.

While it's an annoying clean up, Armstrong has bigger concerns.

I don't know what the threat would be but we know fire feeds on wind. If wind is blowing what else is in jeopardy?" Armstrong said.
