Commissioner of Education visits Port Arthur

State Representative Joe Deshotel invited Commissioner of Education Michael Williams to Port Arthur Wednesday to meet with Southeast Texas superintendents about their ideas on education policies for the January legislative session.  The educational summit was held at the Memorial 9th Grade Academy.

STAAR tests were among the items talked about during the summit. Some say it's working while others say teachers should focus more on the curriculum.

Dianne Brown has a grandson in 9th grade and she says students are learning the STAAR and not the curriculum. Brown says her grandson has homework every night and most of it is preparing him for the STAAR exam.

Commissioner Williams tells 12 News HD parents need to slow done and allow the state, districts and schools to get through this new process.

The STAAR exam replaced TAKS testing last school year. Williams says it's still new and last year was a transitioning stage. But, Williams says there's still work to be done. He says the state wants to prepare all students for college and their careers after graduating high school.
