Small community hosts 'National Night Out'

Posted: Updated:

A small Beaumont community took a stand against crime Tuesday.

Tenants of the Stone Hearst Apartments hosted "National Night Out" in the 1600 block of East Lucas Drive.

National night out is a crime and drug prevention event usually sponsored by a city's police department. Instead, Beaumont Police Officers were the guests Tuesday at Stone Hearst.

Neighbors hosted the event to raise awareness of crime and how citizens can help stop it.

"It starts here but what happens when we get the whole city involved? Imagine the change we could make," Property manager Angela Bryant said.

Visitors were encouraged to meet and greet with police officers.

Police Chief Jim Singletary and Mcgruff the Crime Dog were two notable names at the event.

The complex offered music, food and goodie bags for the children all at no expense to attendee's.

Tenants say the fun didn't overshadow the message that criminals stand no chance in Beaumont with the community and police department working together.
